Scalability testing: 7 steps to success
May 3rd, 2011 by admin
Systems that work well during development, deployed on a small scale, can fail to meet performance goals when the deployment is scaled up to support real levels of use.
An apposite example of this comes from a major blue chip company that recently outsourced the development of an innovative high technology platform. Though development was behind schedule this was deemed acceptable. The system gradually passed through functional elements of the user acceptance testing and eventually it looked like a deployment date could be set. But then the supplier started load testing and scalability testing. There followed a prolonged and costly period of architectural changes and changes to the system requirements. The supplier battled heroically to provide an acceptable system, until finally the project was mothballed.
This is not an isolated case. IT folklore abounds with similar tales. From ambulance dispatch systems to web-sites for the electronic submission of tax returns, systems fail as they scale and experience peak demands. All of these projects appear not to have identified and ordered the major risks they faced. This is a fundamental stage of risk based testing, and applies equally to scalability testing or load testing as it does to functionality testing or business continuity testing. With no risk assessment they did not recognise that scaling was amongst the biggest risks, far more so that delivering all the functionality
Recent trends towards Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) attempt to address the issue of scalability but also introduce new issues. Incorporating externally provided services into your overall solution means that your ability to scale now depends upon these external system operate under load. Assuring this is a demanding task and sadly the load testing and stress testing here is often overlooked.
Better practice is to start the development of a large scale software system with its performance clearly in mind, particularly scalability testing, volume testing and load testing. To create this performance testing focus:
1. Research and quantify the data volumes and transaction volumes the target market implies. Some of these figures can be eye openers and help the business users realise the full scale of the system. This alone can lead to reassessment of the priority of many features.
2, Determine the way features could be presented to users and the system structured in order to make scaling of the system easier. Do not try and have the same functionality you would have for a single user desktop solution provide an appropriate scalable alternative.
3. Recognise that an intrinsic part of the development process is load testing at representative scale on each incremental software release. This is continual testing, focusing on the biggest risk to the project: the ability to operate at full scale.
4. Ensure load testing is adequate both in scope and rigour. Load testing is not just about measuring response times with a performance test. The load testing programme needs to include other types of load testing including stress testing, reliability testing, and endurance testing.
5. Dont forget that failures will occur. Large scale systems generally include server clusters with fail-over behaviour. Failure testing, fail-over testing and recovery testing carried out on representative scale systems operating under load should be included.
6. Dont forget catastrophic failure could occur. For large scale problems, disaster testing and disaster recovery testing should be carried out at representative scale and loads. These activities can be considered the technical layers of business continuity testing.
7. Recognise external services if you use them. Where you are adopting an SOA approach and are dependent on external services you need to be certain that the throughput and turnaround time on these services will remain acceptable as your system scales and its demands increase. A smart system architecture will include a graceful response and fall-back operation should the external service behaviour deteriorate or fail.

Rock And Roll With Myspace Layouts
April 25th, 2011 by admin
MySpace layouts have made the use of the community very interesting. All the users who have accounts on this site can have a load of fun. This is because they have plenty of layouts to choose from, and the activity itself is completely interesting. All users are allowed to customize their profiles as and when they need. It is a great deal of fun to use these layouts because you will be able to create your own as well.
Any color that you need, and any graphic design or theme can be used. If you do not find the ones that you want, then just pick the type of design that you need and use generators to make your own layout. You can play with as many designs and colors that you want. You will be given endless choices to pick from, and this will only make your profile more unique.
This is indeed a very unique aspect of the site, and you will not have such options on any other site. Though there will be a great number of MySpace layouts to choose from, you should pick the appropriate one. You should choose the right colors so that people are able to read the content of the profile. You should also choose the right graphics so that is easily loads onto the page.
Next you will have to decide whether you want a layout that scrolls or a fixed one. It can be used according to the profile again. If you have specific information about yourself, which you want to highlight, then you can place that on the top of the profile. While using different options, you must also consider the fact that you will need to keep the visitors attracted to the profile.
All of this is not at all difficult, and it will not be a tedious task, as it seems. It will only be a lot of fun, as you will have the option to get as creative as you want. From picking colors to designs, everything will be of a creative choice. This is fun because with the use of MySpace layouts, you can get a lot of new friends. There are bound to be plenty of new friends because they are interested in the unique layouts that you display on the profile.
Besides allowing people to look at your profile by themselves, you can create layouts in such a way that you attract many of them. You can do so by forming new groups, and also using a group related theme on your profile. This will make your profile and your interests stand out. By taking such initiatives with the layouts, you can gather a lot of new acquaintances.

Fat Bottomed Pixels, They Make The Rockin World Go Round.
April 25th, 2011 by admin
Fat Bottomed Pixels, They Make The Rockin World Go Round.
You know what a pixel is or a least you think you do. In reality it is something that you totally take for granted as the basic unit of the images that have literally invaded life in the last 15-20 years. Pixels are used generically for many, many different concepts that all have one thing in common and that is some sort of image. You could be talking about the dot in a printed image, or the cell of a lcd screen, or simply the resolution that a display is capable of displaying, or more technically the binary code that a computer uses to store an image file.
The computer revolution has lead to huge advances and has taken computer graphics much closer to the true representation of objects in life that we see with our eyes. This is most apparent in the areas of video games and digital photography. When someone is referring to pixels as in the code that a computer uses to store the image digitally it may be more helpful to refer to them as texels.
So how can such complex information be stored into a computer and understood in binary, that is a series of ones and zeros? Well I am going to attempt in the next one and one half paragraphs to give you a whirlwind explanation. So we will start with black and white. Here each number in binary code refers to an intensity of the pixel. Therefore all eight zeros in a eight bit image construct which equals zeros would represent black or in other words no intensity. On the other hand all 1s which would equal 255 in binary would represent white or maximum intensity.
In color the numbers represent the intensities of three colors red, green, and blue (rgb format). The amount of colors in a palette depends on the amount of bits per pixel (bpp) in the image. In eight bpp (two bits for red, three for green, and 2 for blue) there can be two to the power of 8 colors or 256 colors. In 16 bpp there are greater than 60,000 possible colors to choose from. Pixels are amazing arent they.
What you want to know is what this all has to do with internet marketing, so here is the deal. Pixels can also be used to describe space in an add. There are scripts that can automate the production of an add that contains the images of the different companies and if the pixel is clicked on the user is taken to the sales page for that company. The pixels are sold in 100 pixel blocks and this type of advertising has become huge since a student made a million bucks with one page by selling space like this. There are tools that can automate this process and you too could get in on this amazing money-making opportunity!

Remove Spyware Programs Getting Help
April 18th, 2011 by admin
Spyware are programs that automatically download to your computer when you enter an infected website. The files are downloaded in different ways. When you enter a web site that has these types of programs on them they will automatically download to your pc the minute you enter the site. Many times you don’t know they are downloading onto your computer. In order to remove spyware, you will need spyware removal software.
Another way these programs get downloaded to your pc is when you are downloading files or software from a site that has these files. I spent the past 16 years as a systems analyst for a very large company. From this experience I have found that it is helpful to have some sort of spyware removal software on your computer.
It is quite common that many sites that offer free downloads infect your PC with spyware. Once a spyware file is downloaded to your PC it monitors your activity as well as were you go on the web, all your keystrokes, and many other things. The information that the spyware file gathers gets automatically sent off to its host site without your knowledge.
Adware infections are very similar and can slow your computer down the same as the spyware. You may suspect your infected by adware when you keep getting redirected to other sites and receive tons of pop ups.
Spyware programs, once loaded on your computer can really slow your pc down to a snails pace. Sometimes they cause such problems that you can no longer even use your pc. Proper removal of the spyware is crucial in order to clean up your pc.
It is important to choose reliable spyware removal software that will effectively remove spyware and these unwanted spyware files from you computer. It is also important to make sure you have the most up to date spyware removal software on the market.
When choosing what sites to go to on the web you should be safe and carefully choose what site you are directing yourself to. Popular big name companies and such are usually very safe sites to visit. Remember not all sites that offer free software are sites that will infect your computer. However I have noticed that many sites that do offer free stuff to download like games, movies, and free software are many times the source of these spyware files.
Surf the Internet safely and be careful what sites you surf and buy your self a good spyware protection program. One program I have had great success with over the years is NoAdware. The software will remove adware and spyware from your pc. I will post another article soon with a review of the NoAdware spyware removal software. If you would like to see the software please visit my website. If your computer is infected your only choice is to remove spyware files from you computer. If the spyware stays on your computer it will slow your pc right down and in some cases it will prevent you from surfing. Some of these programs make instant changes to your computer settings and also your browser settings.

Exchange Disaster Recovery with SANRAD V-Switch Planning Guide
April 15th, 2011 by admin
Introduction
Designing a disaster recovery system requires planning and consideration of the available options that will best fit your companys needs, SLA and budget.
This guide will help you design an exchange disaster recovery plan in conjunction with SANRAD Replication. The guide assumes that you have basic knowledge of SANRAD V-Switch and Exchange Administration.
Exchange Disaster Recovery Planning
This section discusses both general and Exchange specific considerations that need to be addressed when designing a disaster recovery solution combining SANRAD replication and Microsoft Exchange Server.
General Considerations:
SANRAD replication solution allows for flexibility with exchange disaster recovery design.
The most influential factors affecting design consideration are:
Budget limitations
Recovery Time Objective (RTO) requirements (the time until the data is back online)
Recovery Point Objective (RPO) requirements (the amount of data that can be lost)
Network bandwidth between the local site and remote site
Replication method: Synchronous versus Asynchronous
Replication frequency (only for Asynchronous replication)
Initial volume synchronization
RTO (Recovery Time Objective)
With high level RTO, duplicate hardware is required to allow quick recovery making the solution more costly.
RPO (Recovery Point Objective)
RPO requirements are best defined by the amount of data that the company is willing to lose.
High level RPO requires more bandwidth for both Synchronous and Asynchronous replication.
Low level RPO requires less frequent replication and increases the risk of losing more data.
Network Bandwidth between the Local and Remote sites
Bandwidth between the sites is generally the most crucial factor affecting the replication component of a Disaster Recovery solution.
T1 (1.5Mb) links impose less frequent data replication and the use of asynchronous replication methods.
T3 (45Mb) links or a 1Gb links allow frequent replication and the flexibility to choose between synchronous replication or asynchronous replication methods.
Replication method
When considering which replication method to choose it is important to remember:
In Synchronous Replication the I/O commands are written to the local disk and to the remote volume at the same time. Every IO command requires an
acknowledgment from both the local and remote sites before the next command.
Consequently, synchronous replication is best deployed with a high bandwidth
connection in order to allow the remote acknowledgment to arrive back to the local site as fast as possible and the replication can run faster.
In Asynchronous Replication the I/O commands are written to the local volume and local journal volume which in turn is replicated periodically to the remote volume as periodically defined by the user. Consequently asynchronous replication can work well with lower bandwidth (minimum recommended for Exchange replication is 1.5Mb) since both acknowledgements are local (from the primary volume and the journal
volume) and thus the replication is fast by default.
For Asynchronous replication, you must decide the data replication frequency. There are three factors that must be considered:
1. The size of the network bandwidth between the sites.
2. The amount of data changes that need to replicate each time.
For example, large amounts of data changes take longer to replicate using T1
links.
3. The RPO requirements.
Initial Volume Synchronization
SANRAD replication solution can be used to protect existing production Exchange data. SANRAD Disaster Recovery solution supports both online and offline synchronization. When using SANRAD replication with existing Exchange data, an Initial synchronization of the Exchange volumes on the local site to the remote site must be performed.
The initial volume sync method depends on:
The size of the volumes needed to be synchronized.
The network bandwidth between the sites. For example, the bigger the volume size, the longer it will take to synchronize over a T1 link.
Online synchronization starts immediately when replication is started and uses the same network link that will be used during the replication.
Offline synchronization is a manual process where SANRAD replication prepares the volumes on the primary site and the user must copy the data to the remote site. It is the users responsibility to make sure the volumes on the remote site are synchronized.
Exchange Considerations
Any exchange disaster recovery planning should (at the very least) consider the following requirements:
Quick access to the most recent copy of the Exchange database and the transaction logs. In a disaster situation SANRAD replication provides fast access to the replicated data on the remote site.
The Exchange database and its related transaction logs must be replicated together to the remote site. SANRAD replication uses consistency groups to ensure simultaneous replication of all volumes assigned to a consistency group.
Exchange is integrated into Active Directory. An Active Directory domain controller (running Global Catalog) which is part of the same Active Directory domain that exists in the primary site, must exist in the remote site as well (or at least the capability to rebuild one and reconnect it to the existing Active Directory Domain).
The most up to date replicated copy of the Windows backup set (which includes system state) to expedite Exchange Server recovery.

Questions To Ask A Computer Repair School Before You Put
April 11th, 2011 by admin
Questions To Ask A Computer Repair School Before You Put Down Your Money
Most people realize that getting good training from a computer repair school for a task is a smart thing to do. Choosing a computer repair school that gives you bad training on the other hand can lead to much frustration. Avoiding a negative experience comes down to asking the right questions.
How long have you been in business? This is the first question to ask. You don’t want to be a guinea pig for a school. If this is the first or second year of operating for them, keep looking. I know someone has to be first and you are probably going to get a lower tuition rate but it isn’t usually worth the risk. Running a training school isn’t for the faint of heart. There are lots of lessons to be learned. Why let them learn those lessons on you?
How many people in the program I’m planning to take have found jobs in the last year? A good computer repair school will be happy to provide you with numbers. Even better is if they are willing to provide you with references including names and phone numbers. Unless you plan on opening your own business, knowing there will be a job for you at the end of your training is important. Don’t overlook this part of your research. If they give you names to call, call them. While you have these references on the phone, ask them about the school. What they liked and what they didn’t like. Better yet, ask them whether the training they received from the school was worth the price they paid for their training.
How much real life experience do my teachers have in the field? You don’t want to get theory only. You need some practical advice to go along with that theory. Sometimes, you may find their practical advice being worth a lot more than their theoretical knowledge.
Why should I enroll in your course of study over another training company’s program? Asking this question can help you identify the particular strengths of the training school you’re examining. Keep in mind though that the answer to this question will usually be a sales pitch. Do some outside research to verify any information the school gives you.

Electronic Discovery: As an Attorney, Are You Prepared For It?
April 4th, 2011 by admin
Electronic Discovery: As an Attorney, Are You Prepared For It?
Youre sitting in your office when your secretary buzzes you and says you have a letter in from the mail. Upon opening it you realize its a request for electronic discovery. The opposing attorney is asking for your clients hard drives, emails, phone records, tape backups, and other legacy media.
Do you know how to respond to their request? Do you know what is relevant or not to the litigation? How do you review and do productions on electronic discovery? What kind of software exists out there to help? And cant you just give them paper and let them be happy with that?
So many questions, and not surprisingly, so many answers. To begin, you need to know what electronic discovery is before undertaking any kind of response. Electronic discovery is the term coined to indicate any information in electronic format that is passed between two parties for the sake of discovery during or before litigation commences. Such information can be electronic files on a hard drive, emails on a pda, server, laptop, or desktop, and voice and video recordings among other things.
Generally, most electronic discovery is centered on anything that could be paper, but is usually electronic. Emails, word documents, and excel spreadsheets seem to be the most highly sought after items in discovery. Whereas an attorney could get away in the past with printing out an email and handing it over the other side, these days that is generally not good enough. Email files contain what is called meta data which shows who sent the email, what time, who was ccd and who was even bccd. It may even show what email servers sent the data out originally.
Because emails are kept in electronic format during the ordinary course of business, it seems only right to ask for it in the same format. There are many vendors out there that can assist with processing emails and electronic files for the sake of discovery and productions. Doing a price comparison wont always give you the best solution for a service provider. Ask around. See who is doing a good job among other firms and who isnt. Vendors will take the electronic data, process it by taking out the metadata and create what is called a tiff image and a corresponding data record linked to that image that you can search on. These vendors will even OCR the image so that you can search on the words actually on the image.
Computer forensic experts also exist and would be happy to provide consultation to the attorney who needs help in deciding how to handle this new realm of discovery. Such consultants are usually well versed in discovery requests and can assist in making your own discovery request as well.
Once you have received the electronic data from the opposing attorneys, you now need to review it. The same vendors who assisted you with your own processing can now process the opposing attorneys files as well. They will either process and give you back searchable data files for various popular litigation support software (Concordance, Summation, etc) or some vendors have hosted solutions available that are web based and allow you to do online reviews for relevancy, confidential, and other hot coding issues that you would normally do in your own office with paper.
Now that Ive given a little primer on what electronic discovery is, dont be alarmed if you are not up to date on everything. There is more than enough information on the web that will allow you to sink your teeth in and absorb this ever growing field of electronic discovery. A good source of reading about this field is http://www.electronicdiscoverycenter.com
